The Weekender 24/09/2016

Hello, don't forget that tonight it is daylight savings in New Zealand.

This weekend the Rugby Championship took a break but last weekend Australia continued their amazing run of wins (that's two in a row) when they beat Argentina 36-20. Their confidence levels are sky high, you'd think they had won the Rugby World Cup! Currently the All Blacks have won the championship, with two games spare - the earliest ever, and are sitting on the highest point differential.

The first cricket test for the Black Caps against India began three days ago. NZ started well and then Kane Williamson and Latham put on a good stand to have NZ looking good at the end of the shortened second day. However India bowled the Black Caps out cheaply to be on top and the moment.

The NZ Warriors made a big name signing of Kieran Foran - pending a clearance from the NRL. The former bad-boy ended up being chased by a number of clubs and many are picking great things for the Warriors with this signing, but soo many players do so well before and after playing for the Warriors.

NZ News

The weather has been interesting with a large slip blocking SH 3 between the Waikato and Taranaki. It actually happened the evening of the Waikato vs Taranaki Ranfurly Shield match (which was a 20-20 draw, Waikato scoring late & retains The Shield).

The Police made a complaint to Labour leader Andrew Little, over the Labour Police spokesman Stuart Nash who has heaped unrelenting criticism on the police district commander for the Eastern District. Nash agreed to back down.

Apparently the news of a French hitchhikers dramas has hit headlines around the world after he wasn't picked up for four days on the West Coast. He got angry and damaged a road sign, and finally got a ride - by the police to Greymouth District Court. His side of the story made NZ look bad but over the following days, more info has come out. Apparently he firstly stole a $1,000 sleeping bag from Kathmandu in Auckland, and then stories of a number of people stopping to give him a lift - only to be abused by the hitchhiker!

Labour released a news story showing how terrible the government's housing policies are, with the headline stating that more than a million kiwis are locked out of home ownership. As soon as I saw that headline the first thing I thought was, cool, so around 3.7 million kiwis can afford a house - go New Zealand.

Joke of the Weekender

I’ve been working on my PhD
in engineering for the past five years, but my kids don’t necessarily see that as work.
As we were driving past Walmart one day, my son spotted a Now Hiring sign and suggested that I could get
a job there.
Hoping to make a point, I asked, “Do you think they’re looking for an engineer?”
“Oh, sure,” he said. “They’ll hire anybody.”
