The Weekender 12/11/2016

Hello, how are you. It's been a good week but this weekend has seen a drop in temperatures with snow in some parts and a cold wind - winter doesn't want to let go.

So last weekend the Irish took on the All Blacks - and beat them 40-29 at Chicago's Soldier Field, ending the All Blacks unbeaten run at 18. It's been a bit strange, but most people around here were ok with the result. Sure they didn't want the All Blacks to lose, but it was the first time Ireland had ever beaten them in 111 years of trying, so sure ok. The All Blacks have done well, and while the media might play up the All Blacks winning streak, I think everyone knows any team in the top 6 or so, only have to have a good game to beat any other team in rugby. Good on the Irish. Glad it wasn't the Aussies though, they might not have been as humble as the Irish were.
In other games the South African's put on two late tries to draw 31-31 with the Barbarians, and while the Maori All Blacks had a good game against the USA Eagles last weekend, they couldn't back it up this weekend losing to Munster 27-14.

In the four Nations rugby league, last weekend the Aussies narrowly held on against the Kiwis 14-8 with Shaun Johnson being held up over the line on the 80th minute. England beat Scotland 38-12, and then this weekend the Kiwis drew with Scotland 18-18, narrowly avoiding heading home early.

Last weekend the NZ Breakers beat the Bullets 86-70 with a master class from Kirk Penney with 30, but they couldn't continue their winning streak when they were beaten by the Cairns Taipans 86-79.

The All Whites got three points on the road to the 2018 World Cup with a 2-0 win over New Caledonia when Marco Rojas got a double.

In the second outing at Pukekohe for the Aussie V8's the two Red Bull cars came together but Shane van Gisbergen survived, recovered, and finished third to increase his championship lead to 197 points. Jamie Whincup got a drive through penalty for the incident and dropped to last. In the final race, Shane cruised to a second place with Jamie Whincup taking the win, but it was enough for Shane van Gisbergen became the first Kiwi to win the Jason Richards Trophy.

NZ News

Rather than looking cool calm and collected, the Labour party is looking quite the opposite after MP Phil Twyford launched a "Labour leader approved" attack on a 1 News reporter for being "unprofessional" and "biased" against Labour. And that claim came out because Labour released a proposed six month job scheme with a cost of $60m. The 1 News reporter did some calculations and figured out it would cost way more. It turns out although Labour was claiming it was a six month scheme, their calculations were assuming people would only use it for four months. If Labour, led by Andrew Little, can't make rational policy (even as opposition!), and then attack others when they find out the hidden truth, it seems like they aren't even interested in running the country next year.
